Research Interest
My current work has involved studying the molecular mechanisms behind the clumping phenomena that can occur between P. falciparum infected erythrocytes and platelets. This platelet mediated clumping has been detected both in parasites obtained from malaria patients and in culture-adapted laboratory strains but the basis of the interaction is poorly understood. I have also been involved in the investigations into finding specific malaria parasite ligands for binding to human brain endothelial cells. The overall aim is to identify targets for interventions to treat or prevent cerebral malaria.
